"Cryptography in a Quantum World"
24 Apr 2017
By Professor Gilles Brassard
Department of Computer Science and Operations Research
University of Montréal
We live in the age of information. Huge amounts of information flow everyday under our fingertips: whenever we type a message, read news, watch a movie, or play a game on our phone. But what is information? And how can we exchange it in a secure fashion?
Professor Gilles Brassard, one of the leading pioneers of the field of quantum information science, has a fascinating answer that brings us into the magic and mysterious world of quantum particles. He will give the William Mong Distinguished Lecture on "Cryptography in a Quantum World", held on April 26, 2017 (Wednesday) by the Faculty of Engineering, with the support by the William M.W. Mong Research Fund.
Members of the media are cordially invited to cover the event and the schedule is as follows:
Date: April 26, 2017 (Wednesday)
Time: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm (Reception starts at 4:30pm)
Venue: Lecture Theatre A, Chow Yei Ching Building
Language: English
Professor Gilles Brassard is a professor of computer science since 1979 and Canada Research Chair at the Université de Montréal. He laid the foundations of quantum cryptography at a time when only a handful of people worldwide were interested in quantum information science. He is also among the inventors of quantum teleportation, a universally recognized fundamental keystone of the entire quantum information discipline, for which Thomson Reuters has predicted that he will one day receive the Nobel Prize in Physics. He is the author of “Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Cryptology” from 1991 to 1997. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and the International Association for Cryptologic Research. He was awarded honorary doctorates by the ETH in Zürich, the University of Ottawa and the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, and made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
