HKU scientists achieve breakthrough in laser imaging
100 times faster than existing technology simply with an infinity mirror
21 Apr 2017
A research team at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the University of Hong Kong, has developed a new laser-scanning imaging technique that overcomes the limitations of existing technologies, providing more than 100 times faster in scan speed with high image resolution.
The new technique not only can resolve the current challenge to meet the ever-increasing demand for speed and throughput, but could also empower new discovery in basic scientific research, with potential applications in a new generation of biomedical microscopy for precise and early diagnosis of diseases including cancers, and for studying complex brain functions and brain disorders and degeneration diseases including Alzheimer.
The work was published in a renowned international academic journal.
Dr Kevin Tsia, leader of the research team, will hold a media briefing on April 24 (Monday) to explain and illustrate the new technology and its potential applications.
Dr Tsia has recently received the 14th Chinese Science and Technology Award for Young Scientists, out of the 98 awardees nationwide and is one of the only two awardees from Hong Kong.
Details are as follows:
Date: April 24, 2017 (Monday)
Time: 11:30am
Venue: Rm 515, Faculty Conference Room, Faculty of Engineering, 5/F., Haking Wong Building, HKU.
