Exhibition on Achievement of Minority Students in the Learning of Chinese Language Faculty of Education, HKU
28 Jan 2011
Funded by the Education Bureau, the Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong undertook a project to support 25 secondary schools and their ethnic minority students (mainly South Asian ethnicity) to improve the learning of Chinese language.
Experimental activities were carried out with the ethnic minority students. Picture books created by the students themselves were used as a medium for the expression on their daily experiences and views on life while they are learning to use Chinese language. With the artwork drawn by the students and the simple expressions in Chinese, the pictures books tell stories about oneself, family and other relations of the students. Some picture books cover surrealist stories that project themes and feelings through stories of animals, plants or objects. The unique experiences and cultural background of the students make the picture books in simple text extremely interesting, inspiring and touching. The interplay between texts and artwork stimulates readers to feel, imagine and make reflection.
The ethnic minority student project is now having a second round of Chinese picture book writing activity, together with inputs of some students from Bachelor of Education (Liberal Studies) and Bachelor of Education in Language Education (Primary and Junior Secondary Chinese) programmes. To provide the students an opportunity to showcase their achievement in the learning of Chinese language, the Faculty is going to organize an informal exhibition to present the fantastic work of the minority students.
Media representatives are cordially invited to the exhibition at any time during the exhibition. The undergraduate students together with the minority young authors of the picture books will be present at the exhibition to interact with the visitors and receive feedback. The details are as follows:
