The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has partnered with Dr Wong How Man, the Founder and President of the China Exploration and Research Society (CERS), to establish the "Wong How Man Exploration Centre" (the Centre) on the HKU campus.
Dr Wong was honoured by Time Magazine as one of their 25 Asian Heroes in 2002 and “China’s most accomplished living explorer”. He has previously worked for National Geographic Magazine and led numerous large-scale exploration projects that have received significant international media coverage. One of his most renowned achievements is the identification of the Yangtze River's true geographic source after several attempts, now internationally acknowledged as the river's authentic origin.
Throughout his career, Dr Wong has established project bases and centres across Asia, providing platforms for research and education. The Wong How Man Exploration Centre is the first of its kind to be established in local universities. This unique institute is dedicated at nourishing students' curiosity, courage and creativity through exploration. Both HKU and the Centre share a vision of broadening students' horizons by engaging them in diverse research and learning experiences through the spirit of exploration.
The Centre will organise a series of public lectures and offer experiential learning activities for HKU students. Additionally, the Centre will facilitate field visits to ongoing conservation projects.
Dr Wong will meet the media on October 5 (Thursday) to discuss his plans for the Centre. He will also recount his 50-year exploration journey, including adventures in China's border regions and neighboring areas, as well as terrestrial, maritime, and cave exploration experiences in South Asia and East Asia.
