The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a naming ceremony on October 7 for the Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratory in the Department of Geography, officially designating it as the "C.P. Lo Lab of GIS." The event was attended by distinguished guests, faculty members, students, and alumni who gathered to honour the immense contributions of Professor Chor-Pang Lo, a pioneer in GIS and remote sensing.

Professor Chor-Pang Lo, a former Reader in the Department of Geography at HKU, was instrumental in introducing GIS technology to Hong Kong. His pioneering work laid the foundation for GIS applications in urban planning, environmental management, and spatial analysis, significantly impacting both locally and internationally. By naming the laboratory after Professor Lo, HKU aims to honor his legacy and inspire future generations.

Professor Peng Gong, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development) of HKU, Professor Winnie Tang, Founder and Chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong) Limited, Professor Anthony Yeh, Acting Dean and Chair Professor of Urban Planning and GIS at HKU, and Professor Shunlin Liang, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Geography, officiated at the ceremony.

The event featured a plaque unveiling and speeches. Professor Gong highlighted Professor Lo’s career, stating: "Professor Lo was a visionary whose work in GIS and remote sensing has advanced academic research and had practical applications in urban planning and environmental management."

Professor Tang noted: "Professor Lo’s pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for advancements in smart city initiatives and geospatial data applications. His relentless pursuit of innovation continues to drive progress in geospatial technologies."

Professor Yeh reflected on his experiences with Professor Lo, emphasising his rigorous approach to research and teaching. "Professor Lo always maintained high standards and was a model for academic excellence. His work in remote sensing and spatial analysis set a benchmark for future research.” He said.

Professor Tung Fung, former student of Professor Lo and Emeritus Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, shared memories of Professor Lo’s rigorous yet caring nature and said: “Professor Lo’s dedication to advancing technology and his commitment to education have left an indelible mark on all of us who had the privilege to learn from him.”

Professor Albert Yeung, a former student of Professor Lo, praised Professor Lo’s contributions in a letter read at the ceremony. “Professor Lo’s mentorship and collaborative spirit have greatly influenced the way we approach GIS research and education. His legacy will continue to inspire us,” wrote Professor Yeung.

In closing, Professor Liang expressed gratitude to all attendees and underscored the laboratory’s significance: “The C.P. Lo Lab of GIS has become the cornerstone of our department, empowering students and researchers to continue Professor Lo’s legacy of excellence in GIS and remote sensing.”

The C.P. Lo Lab of GIS, located in Room 10.13, 10/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, is now poised to be a center of innovation and education, continuing to inspire and empower future generations in geographic information science.
